Dientes de Navarino Circuit

A great way to get the most out of your trip without the hassle of planning is to book an organized tour of the Dientes Circuit, including flights. One of the last true hiking adventures for hard core hikers!

The most southern hike in the world on the Chilean Isla Navarino leads you off the beaten track and through unspoilt nature and wild landscapes of Tierra del Fuego, far away from civilization. From Puerto Williams on Isla Navarino we prepare ourselves for this unique hike around the “Dientes de Navarino” – mountain chain. During this hike we will walk through mystical southern beech forests, crosIMG_0827-2s vast snowfields and have an impressive view over the Beagle channel. Over and over again we find ourselves close to the rugged peaks that give this hike its name while passing through this rough mountainous landscape. The nights on the trek we spend in a tent in the great outdoors with view on snow-covered summits with small lakes at their feet. After the hike we sleep in a comfortable guesthouse.

The outdoor activities are challenging. Although we do everything we can to make it safe and easy, you need to be stable on your feet and be in good shape. Extreme changes in temperature and weather conditions happen often and demand some endurance. During the hike there are no shelters or other infrastructure so you should be prepared to forego some comfort and live close to nature. A good team spirit is essential as you have to help to build up the camps and to prepare the meals. Participants must carry their own equipment and part of the food, or ask us to arrange a porter with us to help carry the load.IMG_0784-2

The program starts the day of our departure from Punta Arenas. Please let us know where you will be traveling from so we can help you make arrangements if you like and know where to pick you up for the transfer to the airport.

Program

  • Day 1
Drive to the airport of Punta Arenas for our flight with a twin-engined Twinotter to Puerto Williams. We fly over the Strait of Magellan until the gigantic Darwin range emerges in front of us with its countless glaciers and steep rock faces, most of them never touched by human beings. An unforgettable flight as introduction for this hiking adventure waiting for us. In Puerto Williams we make the last preparations for the 5-day-hike and start walking. We cross dense forests of southern beech and wetlands. From time to time we look back and enjoy the view over the Beagle channel. We set up camp on the shore of the Laguna Salto.

  • Day 2
After a steep uphill climb from Laguna Salto to Paso Primero we reach a mountainous area with year round snow. We cross Paso Australis, with its 805 m the highest point of today, and Paso de los Dientes. If the weather is good, we can see the archipelago of which the famous Cape Horn, the most southern point of South America, is part.

  • Day 3
Today we walk through one of the most untouched parts of Isla Navarino. Only very few people explore this savage landscape. From Paso Ventarron (696 m) we can see that there are many more mountains hidden behind the Dientes de Navarino waiting to be discovered. This is the perfect day to enjoy the loneliness of this place and its pristine nature.

Today we climb once again. The ascent to Paso Virgina brings us to the highest point of the whole hike, up to 859 m. From up here we can already see the place of our next campsite on the shore of Los Guanacos lagoon. We take our time for the steep downhill descent. From our campsite we have a spectacular view over the Beagle channel.

On the last day of the circuit we will make our way back to Puerto Williams crossing densely wooded areas and enjoying once again an amazing view of the Beagle Channel.
